Crane Rice fields start welcome the families of Sarus Cranes

The return of Sarus Cranes to the Anlung Pring Protected Landscape (APPL) during their non-breeding season brings renewed hope and strengthened momentum for biodiversity conservation efforts in the area. Their arrival also reflects the continued commitment of Crane Rice farmers, who practice wildlife-friendly rice cultivation by reducing the use of agricultural chemicals to produce safe rice for local consumers while providing supplementary food for the cranes during the non-breeding season.

To welcome the Sarus Cranes in accessing their rice fields located around Anlug Pring Protected Landscape, Crane Rice farmers have voluntarily left 5% of their rice fields unharvested for a period of three months. These unharvested plots serve as supplementary feeding areas and provide safe foraging sites that help minimize disturbance to the cranes.

Leaving rice in the fields is not only about providing food it is a powerful symbol of community-based conservation, where farmers and wildlife coexist in harmony. Every grain of rice left behind tells a story of farmers’ dedication, care, and hope for the long-term survival of these magnificent birds.

NatureLife Cambodia is proud to witness this ongoing partnership between people and nature, and we sincerely thank all supporters who make these conservation efforts possible.
