Technical Workshop on Sarus Crane Conservation in Mekong Sub-Regional

On 2 December 2025, the Ministry of Environment and the Cambodia Sarus Crane Working Group co-organized the Technical Workshop on Sarus Crane Conservation in the Mekong Sub-region.

The event was chaired by H.E. Dr. Srey Sunleang, Director General of the General Directorate of Natural Protected Areas, and brought together 73 participants, including experts from Cambodia, Myanmar, and Nepal, representatives from conservation organizations (BirdLife International–Asia, NatureLife Cambodia, ICF, WWT, WCS, WWF, CBC, FFI, WEA, SVC, CBGA, CI, IUCN), protected area rangers, the Forestry Administration, and students from RUPP and RUA.

The workshop was organized with objectives to:

1.Sharing new research and conservation results from Cambodia, Myanmar, and Nepal and Discussing challenges and ongoing restoration efforts

2. Strengthening collaboration among key partners

3. Inspiring the public, especially students, to care more about Sarus Crane conservation

The workshop focused on five main themes:

1. Updates on the conservation status of Sarus Cranes in Cambodia, Myanmar, and Nepal.

2. Research and habitat restoration efforts.

3. Rescue operations and nest protection.

4. Sarus Crane-friendly agricultural initiatives.

5. The broader status of Sarus Crane conservation in the Mekong Sub-region and across Asia.

Note: The Cambodia Sarus Crane Conservation Group was established in 2023. It is chaired by the Ministry of Environment, coordinated by NatureLife Cambodia, and includes the Forestry Administration, WCS, ACCB, ICF, and WWT.
