Nine Giant Ibis Chicks Hatched Successfully in Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary

The Giant Ibis, Cambodia’s national bird and a critically endangered species, continues to thrive in significant numbers within Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary—one of the most unique and biodiversity-rich landscapes, and the site of our Lomphat REDD+ project.

During the 2025 breeding season, NatureLife Cambodia’s biodiversity team conducted intensive nest searches across key habitats and recorded the encouraging results. A total of eight nests were found and monitored, six of which successfully hatched, producing nine Giant Ibis chicks.

This shows an improvement from 2024, when seven nests were recorded, with four successful hatchings and seven chicks. The increase in nests highlights the vital role that Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary plays in the long-term survival of Cambodia’s national bird.

However, threats remain. This year, the team also documented the loss of two nests due to human disturbances, including the collection of non-timber forest products. We urge everyone to join us in protecting endangered wildlife and safeguarding Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary so that future generations can continue to witness the beauty and importance of Cambodia’s precious national bird.
