Sarus Crane Conservation Update: 9 Sarus Crane chicks successful hatched in Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary in 2024
The Sarus Crane, a globally Vulnerable species, continues to face significant challenges, with only 178 individuals recorded in Cambodia during the 2023-24 regional census. The Cambodia Sarus Crane Working Group is committed to conserving this precious population across the country. This year, NatureLife Cambodia’s research team in Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary has been dedicated to locating and monitoring Sarus Crane nests. As of October 2024, five nests were identified, and we’re thrilled to report that nine chicks successfully hatched—a 100% success rate!
These findings confirm that the number of nests in Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary, where we’re implementing the REDD+ project, has remained stable compared to 2023. This sanctuary plays a crucial role as a safe habitat for the Sarus Crane, supporting them through both breeding and non-breeding seasons.
Protecting Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary means protecting the future of the Sarus Crane.
Thanks to the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund and the #LomphatREDD+ project for their financial support of Sarus Crane research and conservation efforts.
