Re-sighting of the Lesser Adjutant

The reappearance of the Lesser Adjutant (Leptoptilos javanicus), listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, at Anlung Pring Protected Landscape, Kampot Province reflects the encouraging results of sustained habitat conservation and effective wetland management efforts in Cambodia.
In late January 2026, one individual was recorded during routine biodiversity monitoring in the protected landscape.

Based on bird records maintained at the site since 2004 spanning more than two decades this observation represents a significant and noteworthy confirmation of the species’ continued presence in the area.
This important finding highlights the positive impact of over 20 years of dedicated management and strong collaboration between the Royal Government of Cambodia particularly the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and conservation partners, including NatureLife Cambodia (formerly BirdLife International in Cambodia).

“Crane Rice” has emerged as a new identity and source of pride for Anlung Pring Protected Landscape, contributing to biodiversity conservation efforts both within the protected area and in surrounding communities.
We encourage continued support for Crane Rice to help safeguard this small yet ecologically vital wetland and its rich biodiversity for the future.
